Another important infrastructure project with Laing O’Rourke

13 Nov 2019

We are delighted to be working with Laing O’Rourke on Battlefield Airlifter, at Amberley RAAF Base.

This important upgrade will provide facilities at the base to accommodate the C-27J Spartan Battlefield Airlifter. This is an aircraft which will significantly improve the Royal Australian Air Force’s capability in moving people, equipment and supplies across Australia and within our region.

Glascott is delivering predominately soft landscaping at the site including over 14,000m3 of soil (enough to fill over 5 Olympic size swimming pools), subsoil drainage, 2.5km of concrete edging, 6.5 hectares of turf, 1,000m3 of mulch and 47,000 plants.

Amberley is Australia’s largest RAAF Base employing over 5,000 people so it’s vital that works are carried out efficiently and without disruptions to site operations. It is an active base, requiring significant security controls and all of our staff and subcontractors underwent police screening prior to mobilization.

Health and safety is also a top priority. Our team will wear double hearing protection whilst working within close proximity to the runways because of high- level aircraft noise. And pink hardhats will be used to identify ‘spotters’ – the eyes and ears for machinery operators and whose job it is to ensure that pedestrians and fellow workers are not injured by machinery.

Glascott’s Queensland Manager, Gareth Eagle stated that safety and security are of the utmost importance, “On a project like this it is vital that everyone understands the requirements, and adheres to the measures put in place to keep people safe and incident free.

The project consists of 9 Stages with works already finished on Stage 6 – 23SQN building and Stage 1 Training System Facilities works underway. The remaining, larger Stages will commence later in the year with the project completed by, April, 2018.

Battlefield Airlifter is a really important project for us. We’re excited to be working with LOR and keen to showcase our ability in managing high quality landscape construction,” said Mr Eagle.

Glascott has delivered infrastructure projects for LOR in other regions including the award-winning Moorebank Units Relocation in Sydney and the CSIRO Black Mountain project in Canberra.
