Completed Project: Island Wave Artwork Relocation

02/03/2022

We are thrilled to have performed the relocation of the architecturally designed ‘Island Wave’ and associated works at Newmarket Reserve, Kensington for City of Melbourne.

Designed by Lisa Young, the repeated French curve motif artwork is of significant value to the city. As the core of this project, its relocation required delicate coordination to move the 22 large fin structures from Queen Victoria Market roundabout to its new home opposite Flemington Racecourse.

To support the artwork our team constructed 36 meters of structural concrete footing. They also removed existing contaminated soil large and installed a garden bed and granitic gravel.

Despite the challenges faced, including tight access for crane movements and working across two busy CBD locations – the artwork was successfully relocated to its new home where it now creates a sense of movement for passing motorists with its scaled giving both the sensation of rhythm and being engulfed by a wave.

Moving Island Wave to its prominent location near Flemington Racecourse ensures it has a local and international audience.
